Havilah Nnadozie, a 2nd year master’s student at the Institute for Water Research (IWR) was awarded the prize for the Best Poster Presentation in the Omics session at the South African Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SASBMB) 2024 Congress. During the congress held in Polokwane from the 6th to 11th of July 2024, Havilah presented her research, which focuses on evaluating the abundance of Vibrio sp. and tetracycline resistance gene (tetB) on plastic biofilms and water in urban rivers of Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Reflecting on her experience during the conference, Havilah said, “This was my first time participating in an academic conference, and it was an enlightening experience. The highlight was exploring the interconnectedness of different Biochemistry and Molecular Biology research areas. Opportunities like this allow one to ‘look over the fence’ and see what other researchers in the field are doing”.
