Applications for the 2025 cohort

 

We invite applicants wishing to study topics in the following areas to apply for the 2025 cohort:

  • Tertiary science education
  • Postgraduate education
  • Academic staff formation (including academic development, mentoring, and academic careers)
  • Understanding knowledge and epistemological access (including the use of indigenous languages)
  • Sociology of higher education
  • Educational technology in higher education

 

To apply for the 2025 cohort programme, please email the following documents to Dr. Kirstin Wilmot (k.wilmot@ru.ac.za):

  • A concept note* (approx. eight pages) where you outline your proposed research
  • A copy of your CV
  • A copy of your master’s thesis
  • A copy of your master examiners’ reports (if possible)

 

*Strong concept notes will engage with relevant literature, demonstrating why the proposed study is important and relevant to pursue. Some theoretical engagement is encouraged. While we don’t expect applicants to go into methodology in great detail, it would be helpful to get a sense of how you intend to undertake the study.

The application deadline is 15 November 2024.

A selection committee will sit in December 2024 to consider the applications. Only full applications will be considered.

 

Candidates will be selected based on the strength of their application and how well-aligned the proposed research is to the current research interests of the department. Applicants will be notified of the outcome by 30 January 2025.

 

Formal registration for the PhD

 

If you are invited to do so, formal applications need to be submitted to the Registrar’s Division at Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网. Applications are completed online via ROSS. The following documents must be uploaded when applying online:

 

  1. Full transcripts of previous degrees (unless they are Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 degrees)
  2. An abbreviated CV
  3. Your concept note

 

Please indicate the name of your allocated supervisor on your application form to facilitate the internal processing of the application.

 

What support you can expect in this doctoral programme

 

The Higher Education Studies Doctoral Programme is well-known for its support structures and sense of community. We cultivate this using formal structures including:

  • Three Doc Weeks per year, held on campus. Doc Weeks are structured research-oriented weeks where candidates engage with a variety of activities designed to support their own research process through social learning. The structure and content of the weeks includes guest seminars by leading scholars from the field, presentations by our own graduates, discussions around key readings, workshops on aspects of the research process and doctoral writing, and face-to-face meetings with supervisors. They also include candidate-led work-in-progress presentations where candidates share their thinking and work through any research-related challenges they are experiencing.
  • Online fortnightly work-in-progress sessions. These regular online meet ups (via Zoom) provides a space where candidates are encouraged to share their progress, work through a problem or get feedback on a chapter, upcoming conference paper or journal article.

 

These structures support and enhance the supervisory relationship. All support structures are voluntary.
