Dictionary Unit for South African English

The Dictionary Unit for South African English (DSAE) is a non-profit company and an affiliated institute of Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网, Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown), South Africa. It was established in 1969 to collect and record English as it is used in South Africa. Since then, it has compiled extensive archives which reflect the diverse influences which shape South African English.

Material from these archives form the basis for both specialised and general print dictionaries produced in conjunction with commercial publishers, including the Unit's overarching project A Dictionary of South African English on Historical Principles which has since been digitised and made freely available on both Desktop and Mobile platforms at http://dsae.co.za. In 2022 the DSAE published a parallel Visual Edition making online dictionary content accessible in graphical form, leveraging new data visualisation and data aggregation techniques.

Staff also monitor developments in English throughout the world, and maintain contact with international centres of lexicographical theory and practice.

For more about us see our Mission Statement and History of the DSAE.
