Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 Student Representative Council (SRC) recently held its inauguration which saw the emergence of new student leaders for 2024. Simphiwe Inako Mnyande, a second-year student majoring in Economics and Politics in a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree, was elected as the president for the year 2024.
The 20-year-old Ngcobo-born Mnyande said he always knew he was meant to lead. Having held positions like the Representative Council of Learners in Grade 8 and Prefect in Grade 10 during his time at Ugie High School, he brought this wealth of experience into his university life. Former Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 2023 SRC Residence Councillor, Mnyande said this position motivated him to run for presidency in the 2023-2024 elections.
“Leadership is not about the positions, but about serving others. I have been a leader all my life, so my enthusiasm for serving students grew when I served my term this year. I believe my passion propels me to be a servant leader. I also believe there is much to do for Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 students. I do not doubt that my administration will continue from what the current SRC has done for the students,” said Mnyande.
His vision for an inclusive and empowered student body is at the heart of his plans for next year. He highlighted the importance of qualitative education and the maintenance of living facilities. He acknowledged that it would not be an easy journey. Still, he said consistent efforts toward improving the standards and inclusivity of living facilities would be the name of the game. He reiterated his commitment to fostering inclusivity regardless of race, sexuality, gender, or skin colour, aligning with the university’s inclusivity goals.
Drawing from his past leadership roles, Mnyande stressed the significance of listening as a leader and recognising the collective responsibility shared among students. He believes that leadership is not about being the sole source of knowledge but about facilitating a collaborative environment for improvement. He underlined the importance of students’ voices and empowerment, hoping to be a President who advocates for constructive dialogue to propel the university forward.
He stated, “There's a saying ‘with great power comes great responsibility’. I think it is paramount to be able to listen as a leader because I feel like most people think, as the President, you are the source of knowledge for everything, yet you are just being put there to fulfil the students' mandate.”
Reflecting on his feelings about the election results, Mnyande acknowledged the weight of his new role. He expressed humility and honour in being chosen to represent the student body, recognising the gravity of his responsibility. He affirmed his commitment to fulfilling the mandate entrusted to him and ensured that he would prioritise the well-being and concerns of the students.
In the grand narrative of Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网’s student governance, Mnyande’s ascent to the presidency marks a continuing chapter of leadership and service. With his fervent passion, vision for inclusivity, and dedication to listening to the student body, Mnyande is poised to guide the student body toward a successful year of empowerment and positive change.
Outgoing SRC President, Avuxeni Tyala said it has been a blessing to have served with Mnyande this year. She referred to him as not just a man of words but of action. “Mr ‘Thuma Mina’ (Send me) has proven his capabilities; he has what it takes to lead us. To the 2024 SRC, next year is a big year for the 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 as we will celebrate 120 years of existence, and the country will celebrate 30 years of democracy. This means big things are waiting for the 2024 SRC. They should take every opportunity and every space to advocate for the students' mandate. They must never forget their purpose and reason for running for leadership. The student body chose them, and they made no mistake. I urge them to embody the principle of ethical, honest and transparent leadership,” said Tyala.
Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sizwe Mabizela, congratulated the student body for electing leaders of outstanding calibre to serve the interests of the students and the 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 in 2024.
