Pushing for Progression Workshop Two
The focus of the second session is to focus on some big ideas in addition and subtraction, ranging over 6 clubs.
- MC Dev Prg - Presentation for workshop two (updated 16th Feb 2017)
The object of learning for sessions 4 to 9 is:
- Emphasis on the part-part-whole relationships is inherent in all activiteis in linking addition and subtraction.
- Emphasise that addition of two or more numbers can be done in any order is important to support children’s fluency. When adding two numbers it can be more efficient to put the larger number first to encourage ‘counting on’.
- Emphasis that when adding three or more numbers it is helpful to look for pairs of numbers that are easy to add. For example, given 5 + 8 + 2 it is easier to add 8 + 2 first than to begin with 5 + 8.
- All card and dice games are intended to promote learners’ fluency in using number facts
For each session, the PURPOSE OF THE SESSION / OBJECT OF LEARNING and APPROACH TO RUNNING THE SESSION boxes at the top of each planning sheet are detailed to set the specific focus for each session.
The activities and associated materials have been carefully selected from our experiences with clubs over the last 5 years. Activities are provided from Grade 1, Grade 2 & 3 and the IP grades. This means that if a teacher running a club encounters a learner who needs to be extended or remediated in your clubs, they have access to other activities that can be useful. The Teacher's Handbook contains: all activities, master copies of activities as well as detailed session plans using a Session Planning Sheet.
With regard to Pushing for Progression, the materials provide details on the different types of counting strategies used by learners in addition / subtraction. The progression spectra and other detail can be found in the Teacher Handbooks.
SUGGESTED METHOD FOR WORKING WITH THE ACTIVITIES IN THE CLUBS
Some of the activities are laminated, whilst others are printed and use the suggested method below for saving on copying costs. To save copying and paper, it is suggested that you print / copy a master set of printed resources for the club, which are kept in a folder:
- 12 copies if the activity is for individual work
- 6 copies if the activity is for pair work
- Before the session, put each page into A4 plastic sleeves (or laminate for extra durability)
- Learners use dry-wipe markers to work on the sleeve and then use small cloths (for example dusters cut into smaller pieces) to clean the sleeves
- After the session, place the masters back in your file
Below you will find the individual activity resources for this second session (they are also in the Teacher Handbook)
For each resource:
- [] indicates number of copies required per learner/pair/teacher
- () indicates how to print / laminate etc
