NICLE Session 7 2014
Duncan Samson on Number Patterns
Duncan shared some activities using the 100 grid / square that we can use with learners to investigate number patterns and use to verbalise generalisations. Duncan encouraged us to get learners to verbalise the patterns they see. His activities are available here: Duncan Samson on Number Patterns. Duncan also kindly provided us with a number of grid masters for use in class investigations:
- 100 grid - big
- Many different size grids and Pascal's triangle: All grids
Elaine Simmt - "Extra curricula math clubs with learners and parents – insights from Canada"
Elaine shared her experiences of running parent / children clubs in Canada. The children in the clubs ranged from 8 to 14 year olds and the parents came from all walks of life. The key difference in her club was that the parents had to accompany their child and had to participate in the club.
Her activities are based on what she calls "variable entry prompts" whcih means that the activities:
- have variable entry points for different age groups and ability levels
- have multiple solution paths
- are problems that lead to a solution or answer
Elaine's presentation and sample activities will be available soon.
