Relevance of research: Many marine ecosystems are profoundly influenced by their physical environment because they do not allow the accumulation of biomass that modifies conditions on land. The environment is changing at unprecedented rates and understanding how marine ecosystems are influenced by the physical environment is the key question of our time.
