First round: After the 15 June, the longlisting by South African tertiary institutions and The Mandela Rhodes Foundation is carried out. Rhodes will shortlist and interview around 10 or so applicants in and around the first week of the 3^rd term. The competitive apps as deemed by the RU Selection Committee will then be nominated online in support of those applications.

Second round: Shortlisting by designated Mandela Rhodes Foundation staff by the end of July 2017.

Third round: Reviews by designated Mandela Rhodes Foundation staff by end of September 2017.

Final round: Panel interviews with selection committees in October.

By end of November 2017 panel interviewed applicants to be informed whether or not they have been selected as Mandela Rhodes Scholars.

Kwantu Private Game Reserve:  Nyathi research scholarship programme

Nyathi, which means buffalo in isiXhosa, is a bursary programme sponsored by the Eastern Cape-based Jeeva Foundation to advance scientific knowledge in disease risk management of the African buffalo or Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer).

Founded in 1992 by Yusuf Jeeva, the Jeeva Foundation is committed to meaningful research, education and rehabilitation programmes advancing conservation, but also sustainable and long-lasting empowerment initiatives to advance individuals and communities from less privileged walks of life through charity and development work in Uitenhage, Grahamstown and the greater Nelson Mandela Bay Metro area.

“The scientific study of buffalos remains an interesting, exciting and often unappreciated wildlife veterinary research focus area, especially with regard to the impact it can have on commercial livestock farming and dairy production,” said Shakir Jeeva, Kwantu Private Game Reserve CEO.

Jeeva said while African buffalo population remains in a conservation safe zone with acceptable numbers, and nearly three quarters of animals in protected areas in Southern Africa, the need for research is urgent to “close the back-door on the future risks as a result of inter-species spread of infectious diseases.”

“While the trading in and movement of buffalos constitute an important aspect of eco-tourism and are important for African game industries, these issues should be approached with caution, responsibility and respect in relation to agriculture and food security,” Jeeva said.

Buffalo play a major role in the maintenance and transmission of hand, foot and mouth disease, Corridor disease, bovine tuberculosis, and bovine brucellosis (BR), as a large percentage of the animals in Southern Africa are permanently infected with these diseases.

Researchers at the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases and the Directorate of Veterinary Services recently released a study in which they found that the buffalo populations that harbour these diseases were transmitting them to cattle livestock.

This meant that trade and transfrontier conservation projects – which are both complex and costly – were therefore needed. On top of this, more reliable diagnostic tools to monitor infectious diseases in buffalo populations were also needed.

“The transmission and outbreak can have deleterious consequences for the industry and cattle farmers involved in the production of red meat and dairy,” Jeeva said.

He noted the issue remains especially problematic in the Eastern Cape, which he said was “a region deeply reliant on food production on the agricultural front but also wildlife trade and conservation from an eco-tourism perspective”.

Kwantu is now accepting applications for its Nyathi research scholarship programme.

The scholarship will provide both financial and non-financial support to academically-deserving students pursuing veterinary research on a post-graduate research level at accredited academic institutions in South Africa.

Students will be able to work alongside Kwantu Private Game Reserve’s veterinary research team to pursue original research on buffalos.

“Those seeking to make original research contributions in biodiversity management, zoology, game management or veterinary sciences should apply,” said Jeeva.

He said the reserve is also keen to partner and collaborate with research institutions and animal health organisations in the country.

“We are looking for highly qualified and dedicated students that are committed to academic excellence to work with our in-house veterinary staff and researchers, and the reserve’s conservation specialists,” he said.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) are pleased to announce an application process for Honours’ and Bachelor of Technology (B Tech) bursaries in 2017 in the following funding categories: NRF Free-standing; Innovation and Scarce Skills Development Fund

Historically, students requesting NRF bursaries for Honours’ and final year B Tech studies applied directly to the university where he/she intended to pursue studies. In order to comply with good corporate governance, the NRF is implementing a standardised application form and process for all Honours and final year B Tech students to submit an application on the NRF Online Submission system. Institutions will use a standard score card provided by the NRF to evaluate eligible applications, before selecting and nominating students to take up the allocated bursaries. Awards will continue to be made to institutions through a block grant allocation based on budget availability.

For more details, applicants must read the NRF Freestanding, Innovation and Scarce Skills Development Fund (SSDF) Honours bursaries Framework Document which highlights the eligibility criteria and requirements for the bursaries.

Application and Nomination Process:

• The Designated Authority (DA) closing date for processing applications is 14 February 2017.  The DA will process all eligible applications for consideration under the selection process.
• Institutions will recommend students for a bursary award on the NRF Online Submission System, based on the Block Grant allocation to each institution and set equity targets.  This process will take place from 20 February 2017 to 24 March 2017.
• Recommended students must be approved by the NRF.
• DAs must upload and submit to the NRF, the signed Conditions of Grant (CoGs) and proof of registration (PoR) documents for all approved students, no later than 28 April 2017.
• Unspent or unclaimed institutional funds under this allocation will automatically be cancelled by 30 June 2017.

South Africa - Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) - Grants for Student Practice

South Africa - Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR)‌

Background:
In 2005 the Republic of South Africa and the Russian Federation signed a memorandum of agreement that led to South Africa becoming an associate member of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). The agreement enabled the establishment of research collaboration between South African and JINR researchers, as well as research opportunities and training of South African postgraduate students in the research areas of JINR. 

Through the SA-JINR Agreement, the NRF and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) organise the annual student practice, which is held during September to October each year at the JINR laboratories in Dubna, Russia.  The goal of the practice is to build a critical mass of students that can later advance in research in the various nuclear research activities offered by JINR to the benefit of South Africa.

Students enrolled in any of the following disciplines: maths, physics, chemistry, engineering and computer science or conducting research in related areas are illegible to apply.

Eligibility criteria for students:

• Currently enrolled for Honours, Masters or PhD degrees; at any South African university and or conducting research at a recognised national research institution or Science Council;
• Priority is given to students at historically disadvantaged institutions (HDIs) and female students/researchers; and
• Priority should be given to the students from the Universities which have joint research projects in the framework of the SA-JINR scientific cooperation and have sufficient education and scientific capability to participate or start participation in such projects.
• Letters of support from the supervisor (on a letter head) must be included in the application.
• A proof of registration should be submitted with the application.

Application Criteria and process

• The student must be a citizen or permanent resident of South Africa
• PPS does not award bursaries to students that already have other confirmed sponsors which cover their entire academic expenses, unless the alternative sponsor is a loan and not a bursary. • The student must have an academic average of at least 60%.
• The application criteria is determined entirely at PPS’ discretion and PPS reserves the right to change the criteria at any time without prior notice to applicants. PPS also reserves the right to withdraw its financial aid to successful applicants should it be found at any time that an applicant does not (or no longer) meets the application criteria or the applicant has breached any of the terms and conditions in any way.

• The PPS Dean bursary only covers tuition and text book costs to the maximum amount of budget as specified by PPS, for one academic year – payable for 1 or more students within a specific faculty at the discretion of the dean.

• The purpose of the PPS Dean Bursary is purely to assist successful applicants financially. PPS does not undertake to provide successful applicants with any form of practical training and/or employment upon completion of their studies.

Criteria:

1. Participation in Martial arts:

• At least 1 year of satisfactory training at one of three Rhodes Clubs (Aikido, Goju Ryu, Fanchento Kung Fu), if no suitable candidate applies, candidates from other Martial Arts clubs and other sports clubs can will be considered (in this order);
• The holder should have the appropriate attitude to Martial Arts, have the requisite personal character and respect for other martial artists. The successful applicant should show an appreciation of the broader agenda connected with Martial Art, and follow the way of Bushido in one’s life.

2. The holder should be an independent thinker, ideally someone involved in scientific studies and displaying research potential. Ideally the successful applicant should:

• Be involved in the interdisciplinary research. Preferably joining a mathematical sciences (such as mathematics, computers science or statistics) with some humanities (i.e. history) or economics (especially macro-economics);
• Show the clear potential to make a positive contribution to their field of study.

3. Race and gender of applicants will not be considered in the granting of the award.

4. If two applicants of equal strength and one is Polish descent, then the latter shall receive the award.

Fuchs Doctoral Scholarships - 2016

The next round of the Fuchs Foundation Doctoral Scholarships, to be awarded during November 2015 for Doctoral Studies to be undertaken during the 2016 Academic Year, is now open.

The Carl and Emily Fuchs Doctoral Scholarships are available to post-graduate students who have already, or intend to register for Doctoral studies at a local South African university/university of technology (and not for any studies abroad).

The two scholarships are awarded bi-annually, in any academic field of study/Doctoral program formally registered with a South African university/university of technology.  The Foundation annually invites applications from the various Faculties at all local Higher Education institutions and the scholarships are then awarded for studies in the following/ensuing academic year. The scholarship value is R100 000 per annum for each of the two scholarships.

Selection criteria:        

Only South African citizens may apply and the scholarships are awarded based on the following selection criteria:

• Academic achievement/excellence: minimum requirement of a Masters degree, passed with distinction or 75% average
• Economic merit: preference will be given to economically deprived applicants
• Leadership qualities and an indication of community involvement (probably related to the candidate’s field of studies).

Applicants must also be willing to be interviewed by a Selection Panel (typically during November of the year preceding the studies), during which qualities of academic insight, leadership, communication skills and the merit of the proposed study/research project will be assessed.

Background / Objectives

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in partnership with the National Research Foundation (NRF) is able to offer scholarships for postgraduate studies at South African universities. The programme is co-funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the National Research Foundation (NRF). The scholarship is aimed at future academic staff development without neglecting other sector demands for academically trained personnel.

Target group

The DAAD – NRF programme addresses young and rising candidates who aim at acquiring a master’s or doctoral degree. The National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS), in association with the South African Humanities Deans’ Association (SAHUDA), call for applications for 2015.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified students to study full-time (in attendance) towards a doctoral degree in the humanities and social sciences at any of the participating South African public universities.

Programme Objective: The main objective of this programme is to promote scholarship in the humanities and social sciences in South Africa, specifically among designated groups.

Value, period and conditions of the award: The value of the award is R120 000 in the first year. Annual renewals are subject to proof of satisfactory progress. The maximum

Philosophy:

SANORD is committed to re-direct member fees to member institutions through a funding Programme that enhances student mobility. The scholarship programme was established to strengthen the Nordic-Southern African collaboration within SANORD.

Purpose:

SANORD is making available 7 partial scholarship opportunities for students from the Southern Africa institutions of higher education and research. Successful students will be required to spend 3 to 5 months at a Nordic SANORD member institution in order to engage in activities that will support the completion of the students’ Master’s degree.

Requirements:

Applicants should comply with the following:

1. Enrolled for mainly Master’s degrees at a SANORD member, Southern African Institution.
2. Must be willing to enhance their knowledge in order to make a contribution toward the development of Southern Africa.
3. Must be committed to return to the home institution to graduate.
4. The applicant must liaise with the SANORD Coordinator at the host university and provide a written communication of acceptance from a host university.
5. Must provide evidence that the home supervisor and the relevant Dean of the faculty is in support of the move to the host institution.
6. Must, on return connect with the home institution to share experiences gained.
7. Must be willing to sign a binding contract in line with the objectives of the programme.
8. A final report must be submitted to the central office within 2 months after the completion of the programme.

Funding will cover the following:

• A return, economy class airline ticket (booked through the Central Office).
• Visa costs.
• Students must provide a budget for the costs that will be incurred and should include:

- A living allowance

- Accommodation (unless otherwise arranged by host university)

- Travel Insurance for the period

- The actual tuition fees (if applicable)
