The department is involved in research in Nuclear Structure by means of gamma-ray spectroscopy. The experimental work is carried out at iThemba Labs, a national user facility near Cape Town. Nuclear excited states are produced via heavy-ion fusion evaporation reaction using beams accelerated by the K=200 separated sector cyclotron. The subsequent gamma-ray decay of the excited nuclei are studied with the Afrodite gamma-detector array. Current research themes are, for example, signature splitting in the rare earth nuclei, triaxial nuclear shapes, and wobbling excitations.
