Summary:
My research interests include integrated approaches geared towards sustainable urban water management and transitions towards water sensitive and resilient cities. I have a specific interest in the opportunities and challenges related to enabling governance for blue-green infrastructure and nature-based interventions in urban areas and am skilled in the facilitation of Communities of Practice and social learning related to water sensitive design. I am currently leading several national and internationally-funded research projects in the field of integrated urban water management.
Research:
The research focused on creating an understanding of sustainability in a South African (SA) urban water context. This was achieved through the development and application of a composite index, the “Sustainability Index for Integrated Urban Water Management (SIUWM)”. A sustainability framework for the urban water sector was developed and used to identify suitable indicators for the assessment process, as well as those which link with existing measurement initiatives in the SA water sector. The SIUWM combined the results from these initiatives with a broader assessment process based on a sustainability vision to provide a more detailed analysis which can be used to leverage support for improved water services. In this way, the connections that link the different aspects of urban water management can be used to generate a greater awareness of the underlying issues by key decision makers and guide appropriate action towards sustainability.
