NALSU NEWS: Congratulations to Mattie Webb from the Neil Aggett Labour Studies Unit (NALSU) team!
The NALSU team would like to congratulate Ms. Mattie Webb for passing her PhD dissertation defence. Mattie, a Fullbright Fellow, was based at NALSU, South Africa, for much of her fieldwork on her PhD dissertation on "Diplomacy at Work: The South African Worker, U.S. Multinationals, and Transnational Racial Solidarity (1972-1987).” She examined how, during the apartheid era, trade unionists and black workers leveraged workplace codes of conduct endorsed by US multinational corporations in South Africa. Workers used their shopfloor power to use codes like the Sullivan Principles to influence both local and international policies. This important study sheds important light on transnational linkages and workers' internationalism. Mattie was a wonderful part of NALSU and the Sociology department, and we all say: "Well done!"
