Garreth Robertson (MMus, Bmus) currently works as an accompanist, répétiteur, and chamber music co-ordinator at Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网. Garreth predominantly works with the undergraduate and postgraduate students, coaching and accompanying them for recitals and examinations. He is also actively involved in the chamber music course at Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 where he supervises collaborative piano and instrumental ensembles. 

 

As a performer, Garreth has performed in various realms of the music world, and has a strong passion for collaborative piano and chamber music. He has performed on numerous occasions with members of the Wits Trio, Zanta Hofmeyr (violinist) and Susan Motuon (Cellist), who are both nationally and internationally recognised performers. He has also been involved in various productions with Soprano, Emma Farquharson, where they performed in various concerts around the Eastern Cape, subsequently winning the Encore award at Grahamstown National Arts Festival in 2017. Garreth also has a passion for works for piano duo, and during lockdown, he, alongside Tamsyn Turner, founded the piano duo (Duo di Pianoforte). They have taken part in various online events, concerts and festivals, including the Social Distancing Festival based in Toronto, Canada. As a soloist, Garreth has performed with various national orchestras such as the Buffalo City Metropolitan Orchestra (BCMO), the Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 Symphony Orchestra (RUSO), the Free State Youth Orchestra (FYO), as well as the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 Orchestra, and Makana Community Orchestra (MCO). Garreth has also adjudicated eisteddfods both locally and regionally. 

 

As an academic, Garreth based his master’s dissertation on microhistories within Western Art Music, highlighting under-discovered and under-researched discourses within musicology. At present, Garreth is conducting research (PhD) focusing on knowledge systems within tertiary education, specifically looking at the value of performance as knowledge within higher music education. The goal of the research is to evaluate how the knowledge obtained through performance practice can be integrated into the traditional academic framework. Practically, Garreth is passionate about performing lesser-known composers within western-art music.
