A Journey in Strasbourg with Imkhitha Macanda “Immy”

During the June Holidays, Imkhitha Macanda “Immy”, a French honours student, embarked on a transformative journey to Strasbourg, France, for a short course in French diplomacy and diplomatic studies, sponsored by Campus France. Strasbourg is situated near the border with Germany, Strasbourg is renowned for its blend of French and German influences, reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and cultural identity.  Imkhitha’s trip was not merely a leisurely holiday but a deliberate immersion into the French language and culture. She had an opportunity to visit the seat of several European institutions including the European Parliament, provided a unique backdrop for exploring themes of diplomacy and European integration.

Imkhitha faced challenges adapting to the pace and cadence of spoken French. “It took a while for my ears to get used to hearing French 24/7,” she said. However, she eventually got used to it. Through interactions with friendly locals and daily exposure to French television and literature, Imkhitha steadily acclimated, gaining confidence in understanding and speaking the language outside of academic settings.

Navigating Strasbourg’s efficient yet intricate public transport system presented another learning curve. Imkhitha navigated the city using trams and buses, relying on maps at tram stops to explore different neighbourhoods and landmarks. This experience not only enhanced practical navigation skills but also deepened familiarity with the city’s layout and transport infrastructure. Culinary exploration was a highlight of the trip, with Imkhitha embracing the opportunity to try traditional French cuisine, “I chose to be adventurous and just try out many different kinds of cuisines”.

This gastronomic adventure not only expanded culinary horizons but also provided insights into cultural traditions and local flavours.
Beyond language and cuisine, Imkhitha journey enriched understanding of European culture and diplomacy. Visits to historical sites, museums, and participation in local festivals offered first-hand insights into Strasbourg’s role as a cultural crossroads and its significance within the European Union. Reflecting on the experience, Imkhitha highlighted the value of immersive learning beyond the classroom.

The trip not only deepened proficiency in French but also fostered a broader appreciation for cultural diversity and global interconnectedness. The lessons learned in Strasbourg, from navigating language barriers to exploring new culinary traditions, will undoubtedly inform Imkhitha's academic pursuits and personal growth. Imkhitha’ s journey to Strasbourg exemplifies the transformative power of international travel and cultural immersion. It underscores the importance of stepping outside one’s comfort zone to embrace new languages, cultures, and experiences, shaping a richer understanding of the world and one’s place within it.
