Thesis title: Another graphic story that will sell the news? Representations of the Uyinene Mrwetyana murder case by South African online news outlets
My research explores the language used in coverage of the Uyinene Mrwetyana case by online news outlets. In recent years, South Africa has seen a surge in cases of gender-based violence and the media plays a crucial role in informing the public of these. However, several studies reveal that the media either over-sensationalises or inadequately represents the problem. Employing the Appraisal system, this research aims to investigate how the media represented Mrwetyana's murder.
