On Friday, 14th September, and Tuesday, 17th September 2024, the Rhodes Librarians proudly celebrated a significant milestone in the Siyafundisana eMakhanda Project by handing over donated classroom libraries to four schools in the Makhanda community. The schools benefiting from this initiative include CM Vellem, Samuel Ntlebi, Makana, and The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Primary Schools.

The Siyafundisana eMakhanda Project is a collaborative effort between Rhodes Librarians and local school teachers, aimed at instilling a love for reading among young learners in the foundation phase. By providing access to reading materials and establishing classroom libraries, the project seeks to create an engaging reading environment that encourages students to explore the joys of literature and combat reading illiteracy.

Generously funded by the SALI TRUST GRANT FUND, the project has made a tangible impact on the participating schools. The donated items include book nooks, reading cushions, reading mats, educational posters, and book readers, all designed to enhance the reading experience for students. These resources not only make reading more accessible but also create a welcoming atmosphere that fosters curiosity and a passion for learning.

The handover events were filled with excitement and gratitude, as teachers and students alike expressed their appreciation for the new resources. The Rhodes Librarians are committed to working closely with the schools to ensure that these materials are effectively integrated into the classroom, providing ongoing support and guidance to teachers as they inspire their students to read.

As we look to the future, the Siyafundisana eMakhanda Project continues to strive towards its vision of empowering young readers and building a literate community. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our children, nurturing their love for reading and setting them on a path to lifelong learning.
