Lorraine Phahlamohlaka, a young woman in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), is passionate about the importance of shaping the recognition of young women in the field. Originally from Limpopo, Lorraine pursued her studies in Pharmacy at Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网. With the financial aid provided by Aspen Holdings through Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网’s Isivivane Fund, Lorraine completed her degree in June 2023.
“I faced financial constraints in my final year of study,” Lorraine shared. “Aspen played a crucial role in supporting me financially and thus, ensuring that I completed my degree.” The financial relief made a significant difference to her personal and academic growth. “It opened doors for me whilst allowing me to focus on my studies. I just completed my Pharmacy Degree, and I am confident that I will make a meaningful impact in the field,” she said.
Lorraine explained that the financial support and access to education also helped in building her confidence. “Being awarded a bursary boosted my confidence and self-belief, affirming that my hard work and dedication to my studies were being recognised and rewarded,” she said.
When asked about the importance of providing women with more opportunities in STEM-related fields, Lorraine said, “It is important for more young women to pursue STEM careers because diversity fosters innovation and brings unique perspectives to problem-solving.”
Encouraging more young women to study towards STEM qualifications can lead to ground-breaking discoveries and advancements. “Recent history has shown women can bring unique perspectives and ideas to the field, driving progress in technology and science,” she said.
“Overall, I would encourage any ordinary young girl interested in STEM by reminding her that everyone starts somewhere,” Lorraine said. “I would also remind her that although she might face challenges along the way, she can achieve her goals and make a difference in STEM. Skills and abilities can be developed over time with dedication and practice”
Lorraine is one of many inspiring examples of how Isivivane, through external funding such as the Aspen, has impacted and made a difference, particularly in the students who fall under the missing middle. Much like Lorraine, many students face similar challenges.
