Grahamstown based vocal duo Shirilaulu presents their debut Festival production "100 Tongues", showcasing music from several different languages including Shona, Finnish, Afrikaans, German and French.
The name "Shirilaulu" is a combination of "shiri" - the Shona word for bird - and "laulu" - the Finnish word for song, or singing.
Shirilaulu was founded in 2009 and recently gave their debut recital in Grahamstown. The group consists of Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 music students Yemurai Matibe (soprano), Lotta Matambo (mezzo-soprano) and Peter Cartwright (piano).
Matibe is in her third year of a BMus degree, Matambo is completing her Masters degree in music and Cartwright is in his 4th year of a BMus degree.
The Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 Music Department has sponsored some of Shirilaulu’s productions costs and their debut recital in May was held at Beethoven Room, Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网.
The group will continue to work together after Festival and are currently planning performances in Hogsback, as well as a concert tour to Zimbabwe in December this year.
Their works include Puccini, Mozart, Delibes, Mendelssohn and Langenhoven, as well as an arrangement by local composer Gareth Walwyn.
