HEX, directed by Rhodes Drama Department lecturer Heike Gehring, is a theatre collage based on Riana Scheepers’ short story anthology, Feeks. It is a portrayal of experiences as encountered by extraordinary, ordinary women; women who have been marginalised through the ages, due to the notion that their behaviour does not meet the norm.
Despite the subject matter, HEX is everything but a victimised plea or a politically correct preaching. Rather it is a daring celebration of women who has each, in their individual manner, grappled with burning questions and take responsibility for their own joyous or disastrous experiences of life.
Three exciting young actresses, Chan Marti (Isidingo), Ntombi Makhutshi (Iago’s Last Dance) and Coba Maryn Wilsenach (Broers and Lady Anne) team up with director Heike Gehring to give life to the stories of these extra-ordinary women and to take the audience on a journey into womanhood.
The stories are told in Afrikaans, English and Xhosa. HEX will be performed at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown at PJ’s from 20 to 28 June.
