Thomas Salmon
Thomas Salmon is a doctoral student at ISER who has coordinated the monitoring and evaluation of Teaching For All - Inclusive Education in South Africa for the last three years in partnership with the Centre For International Teacher Education in Cape Town at CPUT. He was also contracted in 2018 as a researcher and project coordinator for the 'Department of Basic Education Continuous Professional Development Impact study', the first ever national survey of teachers experiences of CPTD conducted for the Department of Basic Education with the Centre For International Teacher Education at CPUT.
His doctoral research is based on previous work that he conducted as a researcher in an ESRC / DFID funded 2-year study ‘Engaging Teachers as Agents of Peacebuilding’ project which was conducted in South Africa and Rwanda by the 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 of Sussex in partnership with CITE and the 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 of Rwanda. This also built upon prior work conducted in 2015 with a multi-country study conducted for UNICEF looking a teachers as agents of peace. His thesis research examines teacher education and the roles of teachers as agents of social cohesion in South Africa.
He's interests are in social policy and in educational research in particular focusing on initial teacher education and teacher professional development. He has worked on projects for DHET, the DBE, the ESRC, DFID, UNICEF, the British Council and the EU over the last 5 years. He has also published papers on social cohesion and initial teacher education and looking at teacher governance reforms in South Africa. He completed an internship with UNESCO Bangkok in 2011, and conducted fieldwork for his MA in Indonesia in 2010 with the 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 of Sussex in the UK.
Alongside project coordination and monitoring and evaluation work, he has a background in work with ICT's. He writes for several blog platforms, and has worked with the Mozilla Foundation and the Open Knowledge Foundation in their education working groups contributing to work on digital literacy, open educational resources (OER), open data and education and mobile learning.
