Pete Britz is an aquaculture and fisheries specialist and has made extensive contributions to aquaculture research and development, governance, policy and sector planning in southern Africa.   His research group has played a key role in the development of technology for the local abalone farming industry. Other research interests include in the development of marine finfish farming technology, abalone ranching, recycling of organic effluents for aquaponics and fishery and aquaculture value chain development. He provides regular advice on aquaculture and fisheries sector development and policy to industry, government, and development agencies in the region.

Teaching

Peter lectures aspects of fish biology, fisheries science, aquaculture, aquaculture business planning, scientific writing skills at undergraduate and Honours level; environmental governance and integrated coastal management to the Rhodes Master of Business Adminstration in Sustainability course.  He has supervised and graduated 31 MSc and 7 PhD students.

Research Interests

Research includes abalone fishery restoration and stock enhancement, fishery governance, aquaculture technology development, aquaculture and fisheries economic development and sector planning, and multi-disciplinary approaches to marine resource research and management. He has published 63 peer reviewed scientific articles.

Other Professional Affiliations

Pete currently serves as Chair of the Aquaculture Association of Southern Africa. He is a former President of the International Abalone Society (IAS) and programme co-chair for the World Aquaculture Society 2017 Symposium in Cape Town. He was awarded the IAS medal for outstanding contributions to abalone research in 2012 and AASA “Aquaculturist of the Year” award in 2013; and is the Aquaculture sector representative on the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ Research Apex Body.
