PROFESSOR SIOUX MCKENNA

DIRECTOR OF POSTGRADUATE STUDIES AT RHODES UNIVERSITY

We have a close nexus between research and teaching, between teaching and community engagement, and between community engagement and  research

The Centre's goal is to produce a new generation of postgraduate public intellectuals and researchers who can lead efforts against a mounting tide of anti-intellectualism, which threatens to undermine efforts to forge a national knowledge economy.

The survival of the South African research university itself is at stake.

“If universities don’t get better at showing why they are a public good and translating the national knowledge project into terms that make sense to the taxpayers who are funding it, then we are all in trouble,” says Professor Sioux McKenna.

A key aim of the Centre is to foster greater interdisciplinary understanding and creativity among postgraduate students and to enable them to communicate the benefits of the knowledge produced by the academy more widely.

The Centre represents a new, radical model for higher education among the wave of postgraduate centres that have been established across the country.

It collaborates with the 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 of Venda in South Africa, three Kenyan universities, and four European universities on an EU-funded project to build collaboration around postgraduate education.

The approach makes a virtue of necessity. In contrast to many of its grander peers at other research-intensive institutions, the Centre lacks:

  • A Dedicated Building for Its Work;
  • Staff Capacity Building; and
  • Resources to Sustain its Pioneering Programmes.
