SSATL
The Sustainability Starts with Teachers Leadership (SSATL) project, also referred to as ESD Teachers Lead Sustainable Futures (ESD TLSF), is a collaborative initiative aimed at transforming teacher education in Africa. The project involves the participation of eight Sub-Saharan African universities from four countries, in partnership with UNESCO/UNITWIN and coordinated by Leuphana 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 in Germany. Additional collaborators include universities in South Africa, Zambia, Namibia, Malawi, and Crete, with the goal of enhancing the quality of education by addressing contemporary sustainability challenges through Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
The primary objective of the project is to develop leadership in ESD, focusing on curriculum transformation, innovative teaching methodologies, and assessment practices. The project aims to align with the African Union’s (AU) Framework for Teacher Competences and Standards, which highlights the need for well-qualified teachers to address pressing issues like poverty, health, climate change, and gender equality. The project will contribute to building the capacity of teacher educators to integrate SDG 4.7 (Quality Education) into teacher education programs, particularly through developing ESD-oriented transformative curriculum and pedagogy models.
To achieve its goals, SSATL will establish ICT Labs in each partner university and implement a hybrid/blended capacity-building program for teacher educators. The program will train academic staff to become ESD Leaders, who will then initiate Change Projects that drive institutional transformation. The project emphasizes participatory, community-based, and reflective learning methods to ensure relevance and sustainability. By the project’s end, over 1,200 academic staff across partner universities will have been trained, fostering a long-term impact on teacher education and contributing to societal transformation in alignment with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the European Green Deal.
In addition to capacity-building, SSATL aims to establish a Euro-African ESD Leadership Network that will support the continuous professional development of educators and the infusion of SDGs into university curricula. This network will enable ongoing collaboration, resource sharing, and the dissemination of best practices, ensuring that the project’s impacts are sustained beyond its initial implementation phase.
