PhD (Economics)
A PhD degree may only be taken by research thesis. Candidates submit a thesis on the results of their study which shows evidence of originality and independent research. The thesis may comprise entirely of a set of sequential chapters or may include academic articles.
Acceptance of the candidate will depend on previous academic record, an acceptable research proposal and the availability of expertise in the department to supervise the project.
There is no coursework, but students are required to attend and participate in all the research workshops and seminars organised by the Department for masters and PhD students.
Applicants who earn their prior degrees outside South Africa must have their qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) (https://www.saqa.org.za/)
