The Abe Bailey Travel Bursary is a prestigious award which covers an all-expenses tour of the United Kingdom. The Abe Bailey Bursary has been awarded to over 800 South African students since its inception in 1951. Abe Bailey Bursars are selected for their exceptional leadership qualities and community engagement. The Tour takes place over three weeks. It starts in Cape Town, and thereafter, the Bursars travel to England and Scotland, visiting universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and St Andrews, experiencing the cultural life of the UK and meeting influential people from South Africa and the UK. The Tour aims to promote diversity, South African unity, leadership that is open to debate and different perspectives, and to foster commitment to a common future.
Students from nearly all 26 of the residential universities in South Africa apply, and only 16 students (one from each university) are selected each year for the Tour. After the Tour, Bursars join the Abe Bailey Fellowship, a community of previous Bursars who are making an impact in their communities. This year Oyama is deeply grateful to have been selected to represent Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网 on the Abe Bailey Tour.
