The Allan Gray House Committee was invited to a sports evening with Robert Sobukwe, Matthews, Cory, College & Botha House at the Prospect field and netball court. Everyone was divided into four groups and soccer and netball was played.
The RUCE Office alongside the SRC Community Engagement Councillor and SRC Environmental Councillor organised and hosted this event. The Extravaganza was very fun and educational. It had many indigenous games and fast quizzes that allowed us to compete against other residences on campus. We played games such as Budding Q, marshmallow & spaghetti tower, scavenger hunt, and many more. We were educated on snakes and plants, and what Community Engagement is. Out of all the residences Allan Gray House came fifth and we received a cake prize on the 16 of February which we shared as a house.
This was a small and short activity with the first-years where we planted beans in planting trays.
We invited guests from the Wellness Leaders Programme to talk to the first years about all matters concerning mental health, consent, sexual harassment and how to go about reporting such incidents. The talk was very educational and the first years asked many questions.
This hike started at the Monument and ended at the windmills and was approximately 10km. This hike was to encourage fitness, engagement with nature, and getting to know other people and the surrounding area.
The students from each respective house mixed and mingled before we started with the quizzes. The quiz questions were faculty-based and there was a round for each faculty (commerce, humanities/law and pharmacy/science). Following the quizzes the spelling bee was held. Prizes and certificates were awarded to the three winners from the faculty quizzes and to the top three spellers. All participants also received a participation certificate. It was amazing to see everyone come together, mingle, and show off their knowledge and spelling skills. The positive energy and support among participants was heart-warming. The event highlighted the importance of unity and celebrating both individual and collective achievements.
We created an art work using sand, colour paper, plastics, and wool. We created two little earths and little hearts and wrote down what people should stop doing to keep the earth safe and sustained. We placed the artwork on one of our notice boards.
This event was hosted by the Wellness Rep and the Environmental Rep. We had a short talk about letting go and its importance, and we wrote down the things we wanted to let go of and burnt them. We then served popcorn and hot chocolate with marshmallows and watched a documentary about the planet.
The House Committee held a yard/boxroom sale. The purpose of the event was to raise funds to assist our community engagement partner (Noncedo Pre-School) in making sure that the plans that we have for the year are successful and not hindered by financial instability. The sale was very successful as we managed to raise more than R1200.
We had fun learning about the female body, how different our bodies are and the differences between menstrual cycles. With the help and guidance from our Warden we had a productive talk where we got to understand our differences as females with a few jokes and funny comments.
On the 10th of May, our Hall (Allan Gray & Prince Alfred House) attended a fundraising event hosted by our community partner at the Duna Library. The event included Mr and Miss Noncedo and modelling by the kids. Food and snacks were also sold. We assisted as judges and MC’s for the beautiful show.
To lead the discussion on mental health, we invited two Peer Educators. They discussed mental health, it's symptoms, and possible solutions. They established a polite and safe environment for people to share thoughts and experiences, while also making everyone aware of how delicate the subject is. Students were interacting, asking questions, and even stating facts. Additionally, a Wellness Representative from our residence offered some insights on the subject and urged everyone to get help when they needed it. The Peer Educators also provided information about where people might seek help.
The sip and paint event began at 2:00 PM, attracting a modest crowd with music and a lively atmosphere. Participants had access to templates of butterflies, roses, and bees, as well as blank canvases for original creations. The attendees brought out their creativity as they started painting. As the session progressed, attendance exceeded expectations based on previous wellness events. At 2:45 PM, snacks and drinks were served, with chocolates offered as prizes for the best paintings. Attendees voted on their favourite artworks, and the winners received chocolates. The event concluded with photographs of the winners and additional pictures and videos capturing the overall experience. This event allowed students to relax, connect and have some fun after a long stressful week.
At 09h00 we departed Residence, led by our Warden. Even though the wind was a bit strong, we survived it. We went up the mountain across the road behind the Monument, and once we reached the top, we sat down and rested while looking at the beautiful view. It was a beautiful experience to begin Women’s Day with a hike.
On the 21st of August, Allan Gray, Prince Alfred, and Celeste House students went to Noncedo Pre-School to provide a helping hand.
We helped the children do the activity packs we had made and brought for them. We enjoyed leading the younger ones through the educational and entertaining activity packages. While we were doing the activities, other students were busy with painting the tyers in their playground.
The following day, the 22nd the Noncedo kids visited Prince Alfred House for a movie day. Allan Gray and Prince Alfred House provided snacks and party packs for the kids.
Popcorn and drinks were provided. A cozy atmosphere was created for everyone to relax and enjoy the movie and to have a break from academic stress.
We participated in a planting event with Prince Alfred House. We collected plastic bottles from each residence and cut them to make containers to plant our Spekbooms in.
