CSD was honoured to have been invited in 2019 to be the implementing agent for the second phase of the VW Legacy Literacy Project alongside Funda Wande
Building on the previous work conducted in five schools from 2016 and the external evaluation conducted by Prof. John Aitchison in 2019, the CSD developed a strategy for the second phase of the project.
Based on the findings of the first phase, the second phase aims to streamline and consolidate the literacy project in the five focus schools, with particular attention to deeply embedding reading proficiency in isiXhosa – the mother tongue of the learners, given that mother tongue literacy is a strong indicator for later literacy in a second language.
The second phase of the project is constructed upon a partnership between VWCT, the Uitenhage District Department of Education, CSD RU and Funda Wande. CSD and Funda Wande work in conjunction with common methodologies and a shared pedagogical approach.

To honour the tremendous efforts made by Foundation Phase Teachers in the lives of young children, the Literacy Center Managers at the VW Schools in kwaNobuhle held a small gratitude ceremony for the teachers they work with. On the 11th August the VW Literacy Ambassadors participated in an Advocacy and Literacy Activity Showcase. Literacy Ambassadors were instructed to plan, design and develop either an Advocacy Project or a Literacy Activity Project.
An Advocacy Project will be a project that involves advocating for literacy development either within the schools or for the parents. This can take the form of posters, pamphlets, skits, songs, poems, videos etc. The point of the Advocacy Project is that you increase the awareness around the importance of Literacy Development to whomever your target audience is.
A Literacy Activity Project will be a project that involves developing or designing an activity that can be used with learners in the Literacy Centre. This can take the form of games, arts and crafts, a book, a toy etc. The point of the Literacy Activity Project is that whatever you design and develop will be added to the activities that the LA’s use in their centres with the individual learners
Mr Clay attended as a guest and was part of selecting the best Advocacy and Literacy Activity Projects presented. Nomakhosazana Jacobs and Nwabisa Mbatsha from Mngcunube and Vuyokazi Noyo from James Ntungwana were selected for the best Literacy Activity Projects. Nolusindiso Jantjies and Thembisile Zendile from James Ntungwana were selected for the best Advocacy Project. Mr Clay expressed his excitement at the levels of energy and creativity that the Learning Ambassadors presented at the showcase in in their commitment to their schools, their teachers and their learners. They were also encouraged to make use of their Advocacy and Literacy Activities in the schools with their learners and to include their creative ideas in their reporting so that WHAT they do can be included in the levels of success that are achieved with the learners.

Volkswagen Community Trust (VWCT) 4th Annual Literacy Conference 2019
The Education Faculty was well represented at the Volkswagen Community Trust’s (VWCT) 4th Annual Literacy Conference which took place in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage this month. Volkswagen SA has a long history of Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programmes in education. The VW Legacy Literacy Programme Project (VLLP) is an ambitious school-based literacy intervention focused on Foundation Phase of schooling in five KwaNobuhle primary schools.
