Pedro Pinto
Pedro Pinto is a researcher at the CSSR. He specialises in Foucauldian theory and methods. His research interests lie at the crossroads of science and technology studies and critical scholarships of sexuality and gender. He set up and taught the phenomenological research methodologies course of the 2020 Psychology Honours programme at Rhodes 老虎机游戏_pt老虎机-平台*官网.
His PhD focused on mainstream technologies of sexual and gendered embodiment targeted at women and adolescent girls. Based on discursive analyses of popular media texts, his doctoral research theorised the notion of post-feminism as a liberal rationality of self-government that has been at the heart of contemporary capitalism and the industrialisation of sexual difference. In 2009 he received the Postgraduate Student Award attributed annually by the Psychology of Women & Equalities Section (formerly POWS) of the British Psychological Society in conjunction with the journal Feminism & Psychology. His work on post-feminist governmentality is published in the journal Feminist Theory.
As a postdoctoral fellow of the CSSR he conducted a historical research project on the modern invention of 'puberty' as a scientific object and a health matter, based on which he wrote A Genealogy of Puberty Science: Monsters, Abnormals, and Everyone Else (co-authored by Catriona Macleod). Published by Routledge in 2019, the book illuminates the sexist, heteronormative and racist underpinnings of modernity's medical knowledge and concerns about sexually developing children, tracing puberty science from its birth in the early 1800s to the present.
He recently conducted a study about nursing students’ homophobic and transphobic discourses on, and approaches to, LGBT patient care (to be published shortly). Drawing on sexuality and gender binaries as a discursive form of violence, he is currently writing a book targeted at healthcare scholars, students and professionals.
