Give5 2013
This year our Give5 campaign started with the Fire Walk Challenge on the 12th April. Students and staff were asked to walk across 4m of hot coals to raise money for fellow students. The sign up for the Fire Walk took place on the 28th February where Rhodes Alumni Development (RAD) and the SRC collaborated with CASE ASAP, and launched their first Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day, in which institutional members around the world organised events and activities to enhance awareness and engagement of students in higher education advancement. Rhodes SRC and Alumni Division invited students to join them for RU GAME? at the SRC Library wall in order to launch the Give5 Fire Walk Challenge.

The GIVE5 Fire Walk Challenge was launched! Students reacted enthusiastically and by lunch time we had over 36 pledges.
On the 12th April, 36 students and staff members walked confidently over 4m of red hot coals on the Drostdy Lawn Walkway, with the Rhodes Tower behind them and the Drostdy Arch in front of them, to raise money for Give5.

After the successful Fire Walk our Community Engagement Reps and Senior Students from each Residence started the Collection week! Volunteers were organised to bake muffins, hold events, sell doughnuts and tables were set around Campus to collect donations of R5 or more.
Students worked hard throughout the week and competition was tough from the beginning with Adamson and Oakdene House putting in a lot of work. The other Residences took up the challenge and we soon saw Botha and College House stepping up their game. Nelson Mandela Hall quietly carried on in the background along with other houses and halls and by the end of the week, Rhodes students had managed to raise R47 859.36!
Our student volunteers are to be congratulated on all they achieved and we are especially appreciative of all those who participated or donated to the cause. The money raised from Give5 2013 will once again go towards the Dean of Students Pocket Money Fund which provides much needed support for fellow students.
