When the CBC was launched in November 2017, the vision for the centre was to conduct research to sustainably control environmental and agricultural pests to protect ecosystems and the societies that depend on them. In addition, the CBC aimed to ensure that maximum benefits of biological control were realised through excellence in research, teaching and learning, implementation, and community engagement. The CBC is fortunate in that it has dedicated staff and students, (see some of our team captured in the image), exciting projects, and an enabling environment within South Africa to achieve its vision.
We are proud to release our 2019 annual report where we present a synopsis of the research conducted within the centre. The highlights include many collaborations with industry and other research institutions such as a project focused on the insect pests associated with the honeybush tea production, in collaboration with the South African Honeybush Tea Association (SAHTA) and a collaboration with Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) on the impact and control of the polyphagous shot hole borer. Other highlights include the introduction of several new species of potential biological control agents into the CBC quarantine and the release of two new biological control agents for two cactus species in Namibia.
