The 2nd International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) Global Cactus Working Group (GCWG) Meeting will be taking place at the Arebbusch Travel Lodge in Windhoek, Namibia (https://www.arebbusch.com/), September 2022. Due to COVID-19 we have had to postpone it by two years.
The attendance of young scientists at this meeting has been generously funded by the IOBC.
Aims of the meeting
- Raise awareness about the threat of invasive alien Cactaceae to natural and agricultural ecosystems
- Highlight recent research and developments in cactus biological control
- Encourage collaboration on common problems and the sharing of effective biological control agents with countries that need them
- Developing an early warning network for new species that do not have effective biological control agents
- Standardize techniques to control and evaluate the negative impacts of cactus and the efficacy/success of biological control
The Scientific Programme
We intend to develop a series of short articles/extended absracts which will be made available on this website and other similar platforms after the meeting. These proceedings will hopefully lay a foundation for future GCWG meetings to work from.
The proceeding will be divided into two sections:
1. Country/Regional Reports
These could include, but are not limited, to:
- Highlighting invasive alien Cactaceae in a given country/region
- Discuss the negative and positive impacts of the cacti in the country/region
- Discuss current/future management options
- Highlighting any new biocontrol interventions or need for biocontrol in the country/region
- Discuss conflicts of interest that exist in the country/region
2. Technical Reports
These could include, but are not limited, to:
- Recent developments in invasive alien Cactaceae research
- Recent developments in biological control of invasive alien Cactaceae
- Post-release evaluations of biological control.
