Research Focus

My research focuses on the role of mitochondria in stem cell biology and application of this knowledge to tissue engineering using additive manufacturing (Bioprinting) systems. Stem cells hold great promise for the future of regenerative medicine and drug discovery. Understanding the regulatory balance that maintains stem cell self-renewal and differentiation will allow for the biotechnological exploitation of this biomedical resource in tissue engineering.

Current research projects include:
  • Novel factors regulating adipogenesis
  • Directed differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells and neural stem cells
  • Protein-protein and protein-small molecule interactions regulating novel signalling protein localisation
  • Development of novel scaffolds for 3D tissue culture for stem cell maintenance and differentiation
  • Development of novel low cost bioprinting units for 3D tissue engineering
  • Design and development of low cost automated microscopy units.
