COURSE OVERVIEW:

This introductory course covers a broad range of anthropological knowledge which provides students with insight into the discipline, its origins and development, and place in contemporary society. It speaks to the four-field approach, pioneered by Frans Boaz, of archaeological, linguistic, physical, and social anthropology. From these come more specific approaches to anthropology, which include; socio-cultural, ecological, physical/ biological, environmental, visual and performance, and medical anthropology.

The first year course reflects on anthropology historically and the critical repositioning that the discipline has been, and continues to go through. Through unpacking key anthropological concepts, case studies, and theoretical movements, students learn about the importance of social relationships with and between community and the environment, and the evolution of human societies.
