The aim of this Postgraduate Diploma in Heritage Management, registered on the NQF at honours level (NQF level 8), is to introduce the idea of ‘heritage’ as fundamental to humanity’s pastoral care of the past, and intrinsic to the experience of the present. The heritage sector is becoming increasingly influential and important worldwide and this course specifically raises the issue of Africa’s position in the global field of heritage management, highlighting the particularities of local contexts. |
Understandings of heritage, and how to care for it, have, and continue to be, heavily contested. Existing and aspirant heritage practitioners must be encouraged to cultivate sensitivity to contestations, craft new definitions of heritage, and to consider innovative approaches to heritage management if the full potential of the field is to be realised. |
